Probiotics

What Are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. We usually think of bacteria as something that causes diseases. But your body is full of bacteria, amassing up to 1kg in weight, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called "good" or "helpful" bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.

Probiotics are naturally found in your body. You can also find them in some foods and supplements.

We acquire them from the moment we are born. Mainly from our mothers, (breast milk or also formula) and continually pick various strains up throughout our lives. As our bodies grow and we age our bodies favour different strains. Ranging from lactobacillus infantis and bifidobacterium adolescentis when we are young. To lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium longum as we age.

The gut is where the majority of bacteria live forming a kind of barrier to help stop bad bacteria getting into our bloodstream . The gut is also the main control site of our immune system thus Showing the importance of having a good balance of good bacteria.

Not all probiotics are absorbed though. Many live cultures are killed through digestion by stomach acid or simply pass through our GI tract. So in order to take advantage of them we must consistently get them through our diets and supplement programmes to make sure they take hold in large numbers.
